Great news for area mountain bikers.  Today's KC Star is running this story (on their front page, no less!) about how volunteers are connecting the Minor Park trails to Swope Park - eventually amounting to more than 50 miles of new trail!!

    KCBC members,

Yesterday we made some great progress towards our goal of 1000 people
registered for the Car Free Challenge by noon on Monday May
17th--over 100 new registrants in the last 36 hours.

But we really need every one of you--and your friends, family,
relatives, and acquaintances- -to register so we can show our region's
political establishment just how much we want better, safer places to
    walk and bicycle:

Sign up here in about two minutes:
    http://bikekc. org/bikeweek/ challenge. php

Participating in the Car Free Challenge is easy--you just have to
find AT LEAST ONE TRIP during the week that you can take by

    - bicycling,
    - walking
    - transit
    - carpooling

It can be a trip to

    - work
    - shopping
    - school
    - park
    - bank
    - visit a friend
    - any other errand

It can be long or short--doesn' t matter.

    WE NEED YOU!

As Mayor of Greenwood, Missouri, I am happy to announce than on May 24, 2010, I will present to my Board of Aldermen an ordinance making the Harassment of Bicyclist a crime.

The ordinance, which is modeled after a similar ordinance in Columbia, Missouri, makes it a Misdemeanor to do the following:

    (1) Throw an object at or in the direction of any person riding a bicycle; or

    (2) Threaten any person riding a bicycle for the purpose of frightening or disturbing the person riding the bicycle; or

    (3) Sound a horn, shouts or otherwise directs sound toward any person riding a bicycle for the purpose of frightening or disturbing the person riding the bicycle; or

    (4) Knowingly engage in conduct that creates a risk of death or serious physical injury to the person riding a bicycle.

It is my hope that the Harassment of Bicyclist ordinance will not only serve to keep bicyclist safe in Greenwood, but will also act as a catalyst for similar ordinances to be approved by other municipalities across the Kansas City Metro Area.

For this reason, I would like to invite you to be my guest at City Hall in Greenwood, Missouri, at 7 pm, as our City takes this historic step to bring a new level of respect for bicyclist to Jackson County Missouri.

For more information, please feel free to contact me at:

    Mayor Marvin Megee

    709 W. Main

    Greenwood, Missouri 64034

Registrations have now exceeded 230 "full" riders; if you know someone who wishes to participate and has not registered, they need to do so NOW.  The ride will close when we reach 250 riders (not including single day participants).  This could occur anytime in the few days.

In a separate note, Alan Apel, ride photographer, has stated that May 20, 2010 will be the last date to order 2009 photos.  A link to the photo website is on the Cottonwood 200 home page.  Photos from the 2010 edition will be available in June shortly after the ride.

As always, check the Updates page at http://cottonwood200.org/blog1/ for the latest ride news.

The March club newsletter has been published!  We are changing things around a bit this month and going forward.  The current issue of the club newsletter is being made available to club members only.  Back issues will continue to be available to the general public.  This has nothing to do with the recent award the club newsletters have won from the American Bicyclist Magazine.   The board has been discussing this change off and on for over a year.  Keeping back issues available to the public represents the best of both worlds.  Being a KCBC member has its benefits!

KCBC and the Kansas City Track Club have an agreement to provide volunteers at each others' events.  This is a long-running relationship that benefits both clubs.  Those of us who don't understand the sick and grueling punishment known as jogging can help support their events thru saner avenues, such as helping to run the race (vs. actually running in the race).  On the flip side, those sick and twisted people who don't enjoy pedaling in circles and acting like small children, provide some volunteers on some KCBC rides.  Get involved, meet some new people, and have fun!

The first opportunity for volunteers to get out and help is Sunday, April 11, 2010. That is the date for the Kansas City Track Club's(KCTC) annual run, the Brew 2 Brew, a run from Boulevard Brewing Company in Kansas City to Free State Brewery in Lawrence Kansas.

Last year KCBC supplied volunteers to fully staff 4 of their rest stops and had a few people  helping at 3 other locations. I imagine the same 4 locations will be assigned to us this year.

KCBC has entered the League of American Bicyclists Newsletter of the Year competition.  The League will be judging sample newsletters from their affiliated clubs.  Recoginition will be given to a winner and two runners-up early in 2010.  I'm sure you agree Melinda does a great job with KCBC newsletters.  Reminder they are all posted in the "Resources" portion of this site.
